5 Ways To Help Develop A Life Of Gratitude

Being grateful is a great virtue which I believe every human being ought to possess. We all have things handed to us occasionally whether we ask for them or not. And on those occasions when we don’t get our heart desires, or when we feel the universe is not being fair to us by not handing to us what we believe is rightfully ours or that which we deserve, we get disappointed and feel let down. But a way to lift our moods is by being thankful or grateful for the things we already have.

So, I will be sharing with you tips that can help us live a life of thankfulness regardless of the mood you might be in or what may be happening around you. It is important to keep in mind that being grateful or thankful for what you have is the simplest way to lift your mood, jolt your motivation and live a healthy and happier life irrespective of who you are, where you live or your position in the world.

1. Take a break and look around you
The first simple step you need to take towards being thankful is to take a few seconds or minutes break from your busy schedule to look around you and ask yourself: what are the things I should be thankful for in my life today? Do I have people I should be thankful for in my life? If you are doing that, stay calm; it is okay even if you just have one thing or one person to be thankful for in your life at the moment.

2. Show your gratitude and appreciation
Being thankful does not end with just acknowledging or listing out the things and people you are thankful for in your life, you need to take some time to appreciate having those things and people in your life. Most people see gratitude as just a few words, what we fail to understand is the effect of these few words in the lives of those we say them too and how they improve not only our moods but our life as a whole.

3. Take a look at yourself too
Just as how the things and the people in your life are important and deserves to be appreciated, so you too deserve to appreciate yourself because you are as important as everyone and everything you hold dear. You are valuable too, so it is very important that you take time to feel good about yourself and be thankful for you. How should you appreciate yourself? The list is endless; take a look at yourself, the things that make you happy, are what you should do; the people that make you happy are who you should be spending time with and the places that make you happy are where you should visit to show how grateful you are for you.

4. Appreciate the things you have taken for granted
It is a known fact that the things we take for granted are never at the fore front of our heart, so conscious effort must be taken to acknowledge these things. It might be that there are a few things or people that you have taken for granted in your life such as being healthy, having a roof over your head, good food to eat, a wonderful family and friends, among other things. Being appreciative will help you change your perspective towards these things and everything in your life especially when you are going through a rough time.

5. Let your day start and end with gratitude
To make being thankful a habit, try committing little time each day to be appreciative; when you wake up, while taking a shower, while having your coffee or hot cocoa, while driving or commuting to work, while running errands during the day and when you are retiring for the day. Be thankful for another day, irrespective of how it all went, it could have been worse.
